hey everyone, and happy holidays!

if you follow me on twitter you probably know my life has been about 90% miles morales and into the spider-verse, and 10% other, for the past few months. miles is my favourite comic character (i even have him tattooed on my arm), and this movie has been my number one most anticipated thing of the year.

i got to go to a preview screening of the movie a little more than a week before it opened in theatres, and then saw it twice on opening day. i ordered the air jordans based on the pair miles wears in the movie. the first issue of miles’ new ongoing solo comic finally came out and i loved it. (i tweeted my love and salamin ahmed, the writer, rt’ed it and replied ”that ink!!!” about my tattoo. i might have died) (i then tweeted that miles was bi because he did the finger guns in the comic, and saladin ahmed rt’ed that too, killing me again).

this movie blew me away. it’s hands down the best spider-man movie. i had such high expectations, and i’m so happy they were met. my twitter tl has been full of love for miles and the movie, and it’s filled me with so much joy. i wanted to bring some of this over to my blog, so i looked around for a miles, or spider-verse, book tag. i couldn’t find one tho, so i decided to make one! this is my first time creating a book tag so please be merciful lol.

WARNING: the second to last question spoils a reveal you’ll know about if you read the comics, but not if you didn’t. the last question spoils the end credits scene. the last totally safe question is MARY JANE WATSON, so skip to the end after that one if you want no spoilers whatsoever.

Miles Morales, A.K.A. Spider-Man
miles is the protagonist of into the spider-verse, a teenager with a black dad and a puerto rican mom, who takes up the mantle as spider-man and carries on peter parker’s legacy. this is his first movie, and in the comics world he is also relatively new.
choose an own voices book with a black or puerto rican protagonist, that you can’t wait to read or would love to read more of.

DEAR MARTIN by nic stone. i’ve had it on my tbr for so long now, i’m hoping to get to it this year. i also already own it, so there’s literally nothing stopping me.

Peter B. Parker, A.K.A. Spider-Man
this peter is an older, tired, and more cynic peter than we’re used to. to begin with he comes off as very selfish and he’s sick of the super hero business, but as he gets to know miles and the other spiders he starts to love being a hero again.
choose a book you didn’t really like at first, but ended up loving.

THE SEAFARER’S KISS by julia ember. i wouldn’t really go as far as saying i didn’t like the seafarer’s kiss at the beginning, but i didn’t like it as much as i’d hoped. it’s been a while since i read it so i don’t really remember why, but i had a bit of a hard time getting into it. in the end i ended up really, really enjoying it, tho!

Gwen Stacy, A.K.A. Spider-Woman
gwen stacy is originally one of the most famous girlfriends of peter parker, and a fridged one at that. this version of gwen is one who got bitten by the spider instead of peter, and therefore became spider-woman, while peter went down a very different path. her comic is called spider-gwen, and it’s one of marvel’s biggest hits the last few years.
choose a book that got a lot of hype, and deserved it.

THE HATE U GIVE by angie thomas. everyone loved this book, i loved this book. do i need to say more?

Peter Parker, A.K.A. Spider-Man
this peter was nicknamed RIPeter by the creative team. he was in his prime, a grad student in his late 20’s and married to the love of his life, mj watson, when he was killed trying to save new york, and the world.
choose a book that ended too early.

THE BLACK GOD’S DRUMS by p. djèlí clark. i know this is a novella, it’s supposed to be short. and it wasn’t that i felt it needed to be longer, but i just loved it so much that i didn’t want it to end.

Peni Parker, A.K.A. SP//dr
peni parker is a teenager from a futuristic new york, and operates a big robot called SP//dr alongside a spider with which she shares a psychic link. she is incredibly smart, and works computers and programming at lightning speed like it’s nothing.
your favourite book where computers/programming/hacking is a big part.

WARCROSS by marie lu. this one also could’ve gone under the hype question. you probably already know what it’s about (and if you don’t, you can at least gather that it’s about computers, programming, or hacking, because of the question). regardless, i loved it.

Peter Parker, A.K.A. Spider-Man Noir
this peter parker is a jaded spider-man from a black and white 1930’s.
your favourite historical book.

WOLF BROTHER by michelle paver. this is my childhood favourite series, and i never see anyone mention it so i never pass on an opportunity to talk about it!

Peter Porker, A.K.A. Spider-Ham
peter porker is from a cartoon-y universe, where he was a spider who got bitten by a radioactive pig. he is fun and silly and can do things like pulling a big hammer out of his pocket, and if he accidentally walked off a cliff he’d probably walk on nothing for a few step.
choose a fun book you know will always put you in a better mood.

QUEENS OF GEEK by jen wilde. i used to never really read contemporaries, only fantasy and sci-fi where everything was life or death and everyone’s life was shit one way or another. this past year i’ve been getting more into reading lighter contemporary books, and until i did i hadn’t realised how draining my previous reading habit was. queens of geek was one of the first books i read in 2018 and i just fell in love with it. it made me so happy.

Ganke Lee
in the comics, ganke is miles’ best friend since childhood. he is a plus size korean boy, he is really smart and kind and excited. he is the one who makes miles’ web fluid, and he is one of miles’ most important safe spaces. in the movie however, he has no lines, does not know miles, and is skinny.
choose a book that could’ve been so much more than it was.

THE BLOOD OF OLYMPUS by rick riordan. i love rick riordan and his mg books so much. i did enjoy the blood of olympus, it’s just that i did not meet my expectations as the final book in an epic five book series. so much had built up, and while a lot of the main characters would make appearances in his other books, this was the last of their series. unfortunately it didn’t meet my expectations.

Rio Morales and Jefferson Davis
rio and jefferson are miles’ parents. they’re loving and protecting, and do everything they can to give miles every opportunity.
your favourite book with a strong family element.

TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE by jenny han. this is another example of me finally starting to read more contemporary, and loving it. i’m a sucker for the found family trope, but i also feel like the protagonist just being really close to the family they’ve grown up in is way too rare.

May Parker
may is the aunt of the peter who died. she knew peter’s secret identity as spider-man. despite previously having lost her husband, and now losing her child, she still pulls through and helps miles and the other spiders out.
choose a book where a character from a companion novel is briefly featured or has a cameo.

THE UPSIDE OF UNREQUITED by becky albertalli. the protagonist of this book, and her twin sister, are cousins to one of the main characters from simon vs. the homo sapiens agenda. both said cousin, and simon, show up. i know some people prefer books to be in their own separate universes, but i love it when authors expand their universes and have characters from different books briefly meet or interact.

Mary Jane Watson
mj watson is the wife of the peter who died, and in the comics she is one of the most known love interests of peter parker. she is a bussiness woman and former model, and the one all of new york expects a public reaction from after peter’s death.
choose a book that deals with fame.

I WAS BORN FOR THIS by alice oseman. i think most people at least have a vague knowledge of what this book is about, but one of the two protagonists is in a world famous band, while the other is a huge fan of said band. i loved how it explored both sides of fame and fandom.

Aaron Davis, A.K.A. The Prowler
aaron davis is miles’ uncle. he is the person miles goes to when he needs to escape for a bit, and miles looks up to him a great deal. unfortunately, aaron is on the wrong side of the law, and it is revealed that he works for the kingpin as the prowler. despite this, he loves miles so much and would never follow through with the kingpin’s orders if it meant hurting miles.
choose a book with a character who does really bad things, but who you can’t help but love.

SIX OF CROWS by leigh bardugo. listen, i know this is such an obvious choice and i really should come up with something better, but that doesn’t change the fact that i love my criminal children with all my heart.

Miguel O’Hara, A.K.A. Spider-Man 2099
miguel o’hara had a surprise appearance in the end credits scene of into the spider-verse. he is spider-man in the year 2099, in a world ruined by war and greed and where the divide between the rich and the poor is even bigger than it is now. miguel took it upon himself to replicate the original spider-man and become a protector of new york.
choose a dystopia with a surprising ending.

UGLIES by scott westerfeld. i know this is only the first book in a series, and the ending of the last book is way more in the vein of what i thought would happen. just the first book in itself, tho? i couldn’t believe my eyes.

so! that’s it! this was so much fun, but much more difficult than i anticipated lmao. there are 13 questions (or 11 if you skip the spoiler-y ones), and i’ll paste them in at the very bottom so it’s easier to grab them if you wanna do this tag, which i hope you do! you can also feel free to use the banner i made. if you do this tag, please let me know so i can check it out!
